Hey there, travel enthusiasts!

Do you find yourself looking ahead to the New Year and wondering, “Could 2024 be the year I become a travel agent?”

Well, you’re in the right place because yes, you absolutely can make your dream of becoming a travel agent a reality in the coming year. You just need to know how.

The truth is, there are lots of different ways you can become a travel agent. Unfortunately, not all of these ways are likely to lead you to the fabulous, successful life that you are dreaming of. Some ways could see you struggling to find clients on your own, or going to get a four-year degree that you honestly don’t need, or working for a bad host agency with no plan for your own growth.

Read on to learn how you can kickstart your travel advisor journey in 2024.

Key Considerations Before Embarking on Your Travel Advisor Journey

Becoming a travel advisor is not just about chasing perks and discounts, although those are fantastic benefits. Instead, think about how much you’re willing to dedicate to this venture of turning your passion for travel into a rewarding career. Because yes, it is very rewarding but it also requires a commitment to continuous learning.

Exploring Different Paths to Becoming a Travel Advisor

Good news, there are a number of paths you can take to become a travel adviser in 2024, and beyond. Whether you’re starting from scratch or considering a career change, there are options for everyone. Regardless of what you choose, it’s important to invest in a comprehensive travel industry education.

Education Options: Traditional vs. Modern

A traditional method to pursue a travel advisor career is to earn a four-year degree in tourism or go through a longer certification process. The positive is that once you have the degree or certification, it cannot be taken away from you. The biggest drawback for going this route is that you often aren’t shown how to run a business, meaning there’s a gap between understanding the industry and creating a successful travel business.

A more modern approach is to pursue education in the form of shorter certifications and trainings, like the Careers on Vacation Mastermind. Our certification is a 12-week program where you get hands-on training, a personal mentor and lifetime access to the content. You don’t have to worry about paying annually to keep your certification up to date. Additionally, our program offers both education on travel and tourism as well as how to set up and run a travel business.

Navigating Agency Hosting Models and Travel MLMs

It’s common for aspiring agents to think that if they get hired under a host, they won’t have to put in the work to grow their travel business. That the host agency will provide all the resources, training and tools for the agent to grow. While that sounds great in theory, the reality is that when you sign up under a host, you’re brought in as an independent contractor, so it’s still your responsibility to educate yourself, protect your business and put in the work of getting clients. And because they bring you on as independent contractors, they can’t require that you complete specific training – it could violate contractor regulations and put their contractor hiring model in jeopardy.

A note about travel MLMs. If you’re getting into a model that centers around recruiting friends, please make sure you read the agreements, contracts and terms and conditions very carefully. The downfall of this model is that they encourage you to make the bulk of your earnings from recruiting other travel agents to work “under” you or other team, and not actual robust travel sales.

The Importance of Setting Clear Goals

Regardless of the path that you choose on your travel business journey, your first step should always be to start with your goals. Whether you’re a newcomer or someone reevaluating their path, understanding your big picture is crucial to making an informed decision. Last but not least, trust your instincts as you explore the different options available.

Closing Thoughts and an Invitation to Connect

Whether you’re dreaming of exploring exotic destinations or helping others do the same, becoming a travel adviser could be the perfect fit for you. The travel industry is ever evolving and with the right guidance and dedication, you can turn your passion for travel into a fulfilling career.
